To understand the history of perfume in Spain, it is necessary to go back to the time when the Arabs arrived on the peninsula. From this olfactory heritage, a rich tradition has emerged that has evolved over the centuries. The result is nothing short of Spanish perfumes with Mediterranean inspiration, featuring floral touches and very sensual, warm aromatic notes. At Perfumería Laura, we invite you to discover the magical scent of perfumes made in Spain.

The History of Perfume in Spain

To comprehend the evolution and development of fragrances, it's essential to trace them back to their origins. Avicenna, an Arab physician and philosopher, introduced rosewater in the 10th century. This substance symbolized purity for the Muslim people and was also used to fragrance homes. It was precisely the Arabs who pioneered the technique of distillation and decided to incorporate alchemy into perfume creation.

With the arrival of the Arabs in Spain, the diffusion of perfume throughout the Western world began, particularly in France. France became the birthplace of industrialization and commercialization of perfumes, receiving a warm reception from the start. During the expulsion of Muslims from the peninsula, only those dedicated to perfumery were allowed to remain in Spanish territory, to share their secrets. With this small foray of perfume into the West, the world of fragrances spread to the rest of Western Europe.

Perfumery in Spain has evolved over the centuries. In 2007, the Perfume Academy was established in our country. It's a non-profit association, now turned into a cultural foundation, whose aim is to disseminate knowledge of the perfume industry to the general public. This allows consumers to better understand these products, with the intention of them being much more appreciated.

Perfume in 21st Century Spain

Today, the numbers speak for themselves. Spain has become the fourth largest perfume exporter in the world, with revenues of €1.25 billion per year. Of this total business volume, €850 million belong to the luxury perfume industry and €300 million to mass-market fragrances. But how many population segments does this business cover nowadays? It can be said that there are as many segments as there are perfume trends, as this industry has adapted to each consumer profile. All of them share a common goal: the search for new and stimulating experiences.

Distinctive Characteristics of Spanish Perfumes: A Touch of Tradition and Modernity

In the fascinating world of perfumery, Spain emerges as a destination that not only embraces fragrances but also fuses its rich history with contemporary trends to create unique olfactory experiences. From Muslim aromas to modern blends, perfume has found a vibrant and diverse stage in Spain.

The essence of Spain is captured in perfumes, through indigenous ingredients that give them character and authenticity. From the citrus scent of orange fields in Valencia to the sweetness of orange blossom flowers in Andalusia, Spanish perfumers leverage the richness of nature to weave captivating olfactory tales.

Spanish perfumes are not merely blends of aromatic ingredients. They are rather melodies that continually evoke the olfactory heritage that precedes them. Their top notes remind us of the freshness of the Mediterranean breeze. Their heart notes transport us to the lavender fields of Castilla La Mancha, and their base notes often reveal the warmth of Seville nights. Because Spanish perfumes are not only perceived by the sense of smell but also felt with the heart.

Daniel Josier

The first memory of this Spanish perfumer is his mother's favorite perfume. Since then, Daniel Josier's life has revolved around the universe of fragrances. In 1997, he entered the perfume industry as head of key accounts for the creation of essences at the German multinational Haarman & Reimer (now Symrise). This is also the time when he came into contact with companies such as Sara Lee, Unilever, L'Oréal, Puig, LVMH, among others. In 2004, he made the leap to the Iberchem company, and in 2008, he became head of the French company Expressión Parfumées for Iberia (Spain-Portugal). It was in 2009 when Daniel Josier decided to create his own company, L'Atelier del Perfume, with the aim of creating independent perfumes for small businesses. This is also the year he launched his own line of perfumes.

Daniel Josier's signature perfumes are modern yet understated, highly creative. The quality of their ingredients, as well as their careful creation process, make them unique and exclusive fragrances. Ramón Monegal

Ramón Monegal, heir to a perfumer dynasty, is considered a rebel who has managed to reclaim a craft he feels has been hijacked by the fashion industry, in his own words. His fame and quality as a professional in the sector have led him to create personal fragrances for figures like Julio Iglesias. For Ramón Monegal, happiness smells like orange blossom.

It is worth noting that this Catalan perfumer occupies the Iris chair in Florence at the select Perfume Academy, being the perfumer alter ego of Adolfo Dominguez, as well as for brands like Don Algodón and Massimo Dutti. Santi Burgas

Santi Burgas perfumes defy classic norms. Burgas was born in Torroella de Montgrí, in the Baix Empordà, and his fragrances reflect his sensitivity with unexpected formulas that connect with the changing contemporary world. This Spanish brand of avant-garde perfumes was born in 2008, near the French border, in a former warehouse previously used for drying rice. Here, elegant perfumes are produced, whose scent expresses a solid personality. Its first collection of perfumes, Loant Collection, was launched in 2013, and just two years later, the second collection, White Collection, hit the market. His inspiration? Dadaism, a marginal cultural movement characterized by exploring alternative paths diverging from trends, as well as

absurd contrasts. This worldview led him to interpret the language of ants for the creation of his perfumes.

At Perfumería Laura, we invite you to also discover the Primal Waters collection by Santi Burgas. A return to the origins of the brand that will not leave you indifferent.
